August (Week 3) Clubbing Listings: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee

I’m not sure if this is the total end of Ultragroove, or if they plan to return in more blazing glory at a later date, but the club are calling it a day at the Cab after nine years as one of the helm clubs. For their final party they’ve scored Julio Bashmore, one of the hottest UK talents in deep and bass-loaded house. Support comes from The Blessings (LuckyMe), Andrew Pirie (Melting Pot), and of course resident Gareth Sommerville, spinning deep house and disco.

Club: Soma Records Night

The line-up for Soma’s 20th Anniversary party as part of the 2011 Edge Festival is looking good; including Slam, Gary Beck and Animal Farm. For a Soma fan it doesn’t matter – you’re guaranteed the freshest in house and techno beats!

Two clubs join forces for extra layers of soul, funk, hip-hop, house, disco and more when Mumbo Jumbo faces the return of Headspin. DJs Allan Dunbar, Steven Austin, Colin Millar, Dava and Trendy Wendy steal a six hour all-out party.

Fancied yourself a slice of Venetian history? Wee Red Bar are hosting a one-off Venetian ball, with live performances, films, installations and soundtrack. Masks are essential (Thursday 18th, 10pm-3am, £tbc). For more bass in your life, Homegrown at Sneaky Pete’s (11pm-3am, free) and Dubstar at The Store (11pm-5am, £5) for drum and bass, dubstep and grimy flavours. On Friday 19th, Four Corners draw together all the beats of the world on a funky and soulful tip at the Bongo (11pm-5am, £5 / £3 before midnight).


Glasgow

Club: Argonaut Sounds & Bass Warrior: Summer Reggae Vibes
Venue: African-Caribbean Centre

What happens when two soundsystems collide? They produce mighty rumbles of reggae and dancehall of course! Argonaut and Bass Warrior team up at the re-opened Centre with low door price, and all guests can bring their own drinks (no glass)!

It’s the second Sensu Boat Party, so blow the cobwebs and glitter off your shipmate cap for another house and techno sailing from the Science Centre. The special guests will be Art Department aka Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White!

returns to the Polo Lounge on Thursday 18th (11pm-3am, £3) for more electronic disco and house dalliances with Madame S and Fraser Bone, and Nice ‘n’ Sleazy host Durty Booty (11.30pm-3am, £3) with DJ Otis spinning breakbeat, funky house and hip-hop. Walk n Skank hits Club 520 for their regular does of reggae, digital dub, jahtari and more (11pm-3am, £4 / £3). On Saturday 20th, Depthcharge host a Scenic Tones house special with label boss Julius Funkhouser and Tronicsole’s Steven Coyle (Ad Lib, 11pm-3am, £5), and Menergy hosts Slabs of the Tabernacle’s Brian d’Souza at the monthly italo disco and hi-nrg party, with free entry for drag queens (Stereo, 11pm-3am, £6)


Aberdeen and Dundee

Club: Chungo-Bungo & Dot to Dot
Venue: Snafu, Aberdeen

Dot to Dot join forces with the Glasgow Chungo-Bungo crew for a reggae, electro, dub and dancehall special for the ‘deen. Grab your roots music fix!

February (Week 4) Clubbing Listings: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee

Jackhammer welcome the melodic techno touches of Christian Smith, combining the old and new school for a bigroom sound. Residents Wolfjazz and Keytes support. The only worrying thing is that Resident Advisor claims Smith is playing in Austria at the Sass Music Club on the same night. Fingers crossed against a double booking!

Extra: Jackhammer looks more promising with the announcement of Christian Smith guesting at Snafu’s Mothership club in Aberdeen with Adam Ackers supporting. Ramadanman
Runner-up Club of the Week: No Sleep
Venue: La Cheetah

This is the first big guest for No Sleep this year, inviting deep house and dubstep extraordinaire Ramandanman, splashing around the tech-house, funky and ratcheted up beats. Support comes from Jacksonville and Darren Quail of Animal Farm.

Benji B and MC Judah mix funk, jazz, electronica, soul and hip-hop for the global music fans of Departure Lounge. There’s even more live music courtesy of Edinburgh’s hip-hop brother and sister duo, Northern Xposure.

Jack Beats comes back to Scotland after facing the freezing December at The Arches, this time joining the Capital’s Cab Vol, which is celebrating its 6th Birthday with high profile events. Bass Phenomenon Krafty Kuts joins Jack Beats and residents Tim & Jez (Utah Saints) for a special Sugarbeat of breakbeat, electro, house and sweet, sweet beats.

From the people who brought you Trouble (and Limbo and Devil Disco Club) comes another Wonky night of afrobeat, UK funky, hip-hop, dubstep and more, featuring live guests the Asazi Space Funk Explosion and Dam Mantle for a dash of funk, blues and electronica. To add further confusion to Jackhammer’s event, Wolfjazz is also quoted as playing at Wonky (with fellow resident Hobbes). I suspect the clubbing community is spawning clones to cope with all these events!

It’s a bumper line up for How’s Your Party, featuring mainstream and underground guests. The bassline, dub, house, funk, rnb, grime and hip-hop comes courtesy of Redlight, Ms Dynamite, Tayo and Dread MC with resident Boom Monk Ben. It’s a lot to fit in so get there early to catch all the guests!

Marco Carola fronts this month’s one-room Pressure, giving the techno fans more time to groove to his varied set without running between arches. He’ll let you hear why the likes of Hawtin, Vath, and the Island of Ibiza are always eager for his sounds. Slam support with another powerful set - it’s fair to say that hearing them on the last Friday of the month is becoming a Glasgow tradition!
